Dear John (The Novel) Review

“I finally understood what true love meant…love meant that you care for another person’s happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be.”

This quote completely explains the story of the novel. Dear john is a romance fiction novel written by Nicholas Sparks. It was a New York Times Best seller in 2007. We all are familiar with ‘Nicholas Sparks’. Almost every time he writes a novel after sometime, we  watch a movie made out of the book e.g. A Walk to Remember, The Last Song and etc. ‘DEAR JOHN’  is one of them.

The story revolves around the character John Tyree’s life who is in Army. Not knowing what else to do in his life and ’cause of lack of direction, he joins U.S. Military. And then……………..he meets Savannah and falls in love with her during a two week leave. John realizes that he wants to settle down with her. But 9/11 attacks changes everything. US  is forced to respond to the attack and John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. John promises Savannah that this would be his last mission. Because of the long separation, Savannah falls in love with another man and confesses about it to John in a letter.

On his return to the city after his father’s death,  John meets Savannah and gets to know about her circumstances post marriage. Now John realizes that he is still in love with her but at the same time, he has to accept that they both can’t be together again. In the end, John gets a chance to express his love in an unexpected way.

In my opinion, it is that kind of book with which we develop a love-hate relationship. Sometimes, when we think of it, we like it and sometimes, we hate it. The story is beautiful and down to earth. Makes you realize that every relationship doesn’t have a happy end. And sometimes, love is all about the happiness of other person. Clichéd it may sound, but true it is. It’s not about staying together and dying together ’cause sometimes it is staying apart.  John and Savannah’s relationship survives even after staying apart believing in the fact, ‘no matter where you are in the world, the moon is never bigger than your thumb’, which gives them both a sense of satisfaction that they both are together even after staying miles apart. And sadly, their relationship couldn’t survive the last hardship. We may hate Savannah for a while but it isn’t her fault either. As it was quite practical because hardly relationships survive these days. Love HAS to be difficult.

Conclusion: The books is amazing and frustratingly good. And it is down to earth. May be that’s why it is one of my favourite romance fiction. I started reading novels with this book and again I wanted to read some more. I pined to watch the movie of the same title.  And it was good too, watching Channing Tatum as John Tyree and Amanda Seyfried as Savannah. Because it is my favorite so in my list, it’s rated as 4.9 out of 5. :))
